For COACH products, the easiest identification is the receipts. There are 2 types of receipts, if you buy it from a COACH store/boutique, you will get a sales receipt, with the sales price indicated. If you buy it from COACH outlets, you will get what is called a gift receipt. The difference is a gift receipt do not indicate the sales price, it has information on the item purchase, quantity, time and place of purchase.
Why are there Coach store/boutiques and outlets? COACH introduces new line of items or new pattern quite often compared to other branded brands. Items that are still available on Coach.com can be bought in store/boutique worldwide. You will find that if you get a bag in eg KLCC, the same bag you can get from US store/boutique at a slightly cheaper price due to our Malaysia's tax.
In COACH outlets, the items that available are slightly 'out of season', which is brought in from store/boutique when new lines are introduced or season is over. Here, they offer deep discount, and you can get it cheaper still when there is sales. There are also items specially made for outlets, example some the of the signature “C” bags. Most of our Malaysia re-sellers get their stock from outlets, hence they can offer such attractive prices.
Do remember to get the receipt/gift receipt when you are purchasing online. Of course there are other ways to spot a fake like the craftsmanship, hangtag, bag's creed, symmetrical Cs, the zip, the quality of fabric and leatherwear, etc. but the fastest way is the receipts to prove the purchase is from an authorized COACH store/boutique or outlet.
